Admission to the EASA Class 1 medical certificate
The EASA Class 1 medical examination is a mandatory step to enroll in Airline Pilot training. It ensures that you meet all the health requirements necessary to perform this profession. It will then be renewed annually throughout your career.
During an EASA Class 1 medical examination, several aspects of your health are evaluated to ensure that you meet the safety standards required to become an airline pilot.
This examination includes, among other things, a thorough vision test (including color vision), hearing tests, and a cardiovascular assessment with an electrocardiogram (ECG). Laboratory tests such as blood and urine analyses are also performed to detect any potential abnormalities. A neurological and psychological evaluation may also be conducted to assess your mental condition and your ability to manage stress.
3 common misconceptions about the EASA Class 1 medical

A visual impairment does not necessarily exclude a candidate. As long as the vision can be corrected to acceptable standards (usually with glasses or contact lenses), the candidate can be declared fit. EASA Class 1 medical fitness requires corrected visual acuity of 6/9 in each eye and normal colour vision (or tolerance in some cases after further testing).

Being slightly overweight is not disqualifying. What is assessed is the impact of the body mass index (BMI) on the pilot's overall health and ability to perform his or her duties safely. As long as the BMI is within a manageable range and does not lead to serious medical complications, the candidate can be deemed fit.

Hypertension that is well controlled with medication and regular medical monitoring is not generally disqualifying. What is important is that the condition is stable and under control. Candidates can pass the medical examination if they show that their hypertension is properly managed.
