ELIGIBILITY FOR MEDICAL APTITUDE EXAMINATION
The EASA Class 1 medical examination is an essential step in your training as an airline transport pilot. It guarantees that you meet all the health requirements necessary for this profession. It will be reviewed annually throughout your career.
During an EASA Class 1, several aspects of your health are assessed to ensure that you meet the safety criteria required to become an airline transport pilot.
This includes a thorough examination of your vision (including colour vision) and hearing, and a check of your cardiovascular functions with an electrocardiogram (ECG). Laboratory tests, such as blood and urine analyses, are carried out to detect any abnormalities. A neurological and psychological examination may also be carried out to assess your mental state and your ability to cope with stress.
3 MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT CLASS MEDICAL APTITUDE EASA
A visual impairment does not necessarily exclude a candidate. As long as the vision can be corrected to acceptable standards (usually with glasses or contact lenses), the candidate can be declared fit. EASA Class 1 medical fitness requires corrected visual acuity of 6/9 in each eye and normal colour vision (or tolerance in some cases after further testing).
Being slightly overweight is not disqualifying. What is assessed is the impact of the body mass index (BMI) on the pilot's overall health and ability to perform his or her duties safely. As long as the BMI is within a manageable range and does not lead to serious medical complications, the candidate can be deemed fit.
Hypertension that is well controlled with medication and regular medical monitoring is not generally disqualifying. What is important is that the condition is stable and under control. Candidates can pass the medical examination if they show that their hypertension is properly managed.
WHERE CAN YOU OBTAIN YOUR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE?
